Today's workplace can be a dynamic and emotionally challenging environment on several fronts. Today's society places high demands on personal working conditions and how people interact and communicate with each other in the workplace. At the same time, executives are increasingly convinced that if one wants a successful organisation, with productive employees who function optimally, a harmonious and socially safe working environment is a crucial factor.
Socially unsafe behaviour varies in severity. It is relatively common for employees to feel intimidated or excluded by colleagues, for example, or to experience being pressured by a supervisor. However, unsafe behaviour can also take more violent forms, resulting in growing fear and insecurity among colleagues. This creates a lot of unrest in the workplace and employees can no longer concentrate and be productive.
- Stalking
- Persistent complaining behaviour
- Sexual transgressive behaviour
- Dubious or false accusation
- Threat
- Anonymous threat
The person causing the concerning behaviour could be someone working in the organisation, but also an ex-colleague, supplier or customer of the company. In cases of stalking and threats, we increasingly see perpetrators choosing to remain anonymous. We also regularly come across situations where an employee experiences personal violence in the home and this filters down to the workplace, causing all kinds of unwanted effects. A new trend in our caseload is an increase in threats made towards public figures such as judges, artists and directors of commercial companies.
DANTES conducts research, prepares risk analyses and provides concrete advice on how to deal with such situations, and what can be done to prevent further escalation. Where necessary, we take risk management activities off your hands. Our task is to give you peace of mind and unburden your organisation, allowing you to focus on day-to-day operations without distractions and emotional stress.
Transgressive behaviour occurs in every organisation, both in the public and private sectors. Hence, DANTES also works in various organisations. In higher education, for commercial companies, public individuals and various government agencies. DANTES is based in the Netherlands but operates internationally and has a strong international network of specialists who can be available at short notice in crisis situations and provide you with advice and support.
In the European context, terms such as psychological safety and concerning behaviour are used for behaviour such as bullying, intimidation, stalking and abuse of power. In countries such as the United Kingdom, Canada and the United States, these behaviours are referred to as ‘workplace violence’. Experts working in this field are called ‘threat assessment professionals’. In the Netherlands, these are threat analysis experts.
Violence is any actual attempt or planned harm to another. This harm can be physical or psychological. It is intentional, without consent and without legal authority.
Threat assessment and management is broadly defined as a set of techniques to identify, assess and manage risks of violence and their potential perpetrators. Threat assessment is also described as the process of gathering information that enables the professional to gain a better understanding of potential risks.
The threat assessment expert operates in a dynamic context. In many cases, no serious incident has yet taken place, but people around the person causing that threat are concerned and often fear further escalation or more serious, violence.
The primary goal of threat assessment and management is to prevent further escalation. Therefore, early detection of socially unsafe and transgressive behaviour is essential. The task of the expert is to assess the information collected and focus on returning to a safe and productive work environment.
The expert therefore assesses the identified risk factors and warning signs that may indicate that an individual poses a potential risk. This assessment then forms the basis for the development of preventive interventions and strategies.
