Structured Assessment of Workplace Incidents (SACWI)

Today’s workplace can be a dynamic and emotionally challenging environment on multiple fronts. Organisations are increasingly convinced that if they want a successful organisation, with productive employees who function optimally, a harmonious and socially safe working environment is crucial.

Socially unsafe behaviour varies in seriousness. This training will focus more on concerning or violent workplace behaviour such as harassment, stalking, persistent complaining, sexual misconduct, false accusations and anonymous threats. Sometimes an employee or customer files a report that must be dealt with in a professional manner. In many other cases, a serious incident has not yet occurred, but colleagues and other people close to the person of concern, fear further escalation or more serious violence.

Organisations are responsible for creating a safe working environment, protecting employees and the company’s reputation. They therefore have an interest in preventing socially unsafe incidents from occurring and when they have taken place, deal with it in a professional manner and prevent further escalation and damage.

Objective

One of the most important concepts in behavioural threat assessment and management is the early detection of concerning behaviour. This means that the organisation where the problem occurs must focus on early identification of previously mentioned behaviour such as bullying, intimidation and stalking. The task of the threat assessment expert is to assess the information collected and focus on returning to a safe and productive work environment. The SACWI is a tool that assists and supports the case manager during this process.
The participant will learn how to use and apply the SACWI instrument. The main objective of this two-day professional training is that the participant learns how to effectively approach, assess and manage reports and incidents of concerning workplace behaviour.

What is the SACWI?

The SACWI is a (risk) assessment and management tool for non-behavioural experts to handle cases of concerning or violent workplace behaviour in a professional and effective way. It is a guide that consists of different steps and rational indicators that helps structure the assessment and guide the decision-making process and risk management strategies. The SACWI is an instrument to be used by the case manager during the first essential phases after the incident or report, where often crucial mistakes are made or opportunities missed.
It is intended as a triage instrument and amongst other benefits, helps the manager assess the behaviour from low to high risk for future escalation. It provides a structure that can be used to prioritise and respond when concerns arise that someone may pose a risk. It also serves as a guide to communicate about the situation with stakeholders and senior management.

Other benefits of using this tool when dealing with cases:

  • Control and stress reduction
  • Effective communication between stakeholders
  • Minimising silo-effects of information
  • Bias reduction and focus on reliable information

The SACWI was developed by behavioural scientists and threat assessment experts with many years of case experience.
